Plastering and Skimming
Plastering and skimming is the application of finishing plaster. Better known as a 'two coat skim'. Applied over walls and ceilings, the result is a smooth surface which is ready for painting or papering.

Rendering
Rendering is the application of a sand and cement mix to exposed brickwork. It makes a good water resistant surface. Technically, an outward facing wall is 'rendered'. An internal facing wall is 'bonded'. When rendering a wall, two layers are applied. Firstly a 'scratch' layer is applied. This offers a nice, flat, even surface for the second layer. The second layer is applied and then sanded to complete a nice finished surface.

Dry-lining
Dry-lining basically means fixing plasterboard to walls. Once the wall has been drylined, it can be skimmed with finishing plaster to provide a smooth finish. It is then ready for painting and decorating or wallpapering. Because dry lining takes less time than plastering, it ususlaly works out to be more cost effective.

Tanking and Waterproofing
When someone refers to 'tanking' they mean the application of a continuous water resistant barrier coating. It is applied to the inside of a building - usually a basement area - or applied to the external walls of a property. Tanking prevents water penetrating through to the internal walls.

Screeding
Screeding is levelling and smoothing the top layer of a poured material. For example - concrete. A guide surrounds the area to be filled and the concrete is poured to match the height of the guide. The area is then smoothed off.

Artexing
Artex is a plastering effect applied to ceilings and walls to produce a durable and long lasting finish. Very popular in the 1970's and 1980's, it is still a good way (and a cost effective method) of masking cracked or uneven ceilings.
