What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)?
Portable Appliance Testing or PAT testing is a safety check for an electrical appliance. The correct term for this process is 'in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment'. An electrical appliance such as a kettle, a microwave oven, a lamp, a vacuum cleaner. You get the idea. As a rule of thumb, any electrical appliance with a plug.

OK, so as a landlord, why do need a Portable Appliance Test?
When renting a property, you are responsible for the good condition and safety of any electrical equipment that you have provided. A PAT test certificate demonstrates that each piece of equipment has been tested and is safe. You are less likely to be held liable should your tenant get electrocuted, if you can show that you have had the equipment professionally inspected. It is what's called 'Best practice'. |
|
What is inspected during a PAT test?
A PAT test includes a visual inspection of the device to check for damage. Things like frayed cables and cracked plugs. The appliance is then plugged into an electronic PAT testing device. This equipment checks the appliance for earth continuity, insulation resistance and the polarity of wiring. |
|
What happens next?
The appliance is then issued with a 'PASS' or a 'FAIL'. A certificate will be issued listing the status of the devices and a sticker placed onto the appliance itself. Ideally, the landlord keeps this record in a safe place (but we store it for you online in your Multi-trade account). Any appliances that fail the test should be repaired or destroyed. |

I am genuinely happy with this new arrangement. It has saved me many hours of phone calls, organisation and administration. I know I can get the certificates cheaper elesewhere, but I'm happy to pay for the piece of mind and good service. So yes, I'm happy to provide you with a testimonial. [Maybe more information than we needed! - Multi-Trade]

Based on this performance, I will continue to use your services. Keep up the good work.

The new client portal is really good. It's so much easier to get copies of the docs. Keeping the EPC on there is awesome.

There are plenty of companies out there competing for your business - and you need to make sure you're armed with all the facts before you make a decision about which one to choose. Here are a few things to check before you decide - we're confident that if you're looking for great service you'll choose Multi-Trade!
- Does the company or tradesperson you're considering offer free quotations?
- Do they offer an open and honest pricing structure with no hidden costs?
- Are their engineers registered with Gas Safe?
- Remember - it is a legal requirement when working with gas.
- Do they have a contactable office, not just a mobile in case of any queries?
- Does anyone answer the phone in the day?
- Are their tradespeople honest, reliable, polite and vetted?
If the answer to any of these questions is 'no' then give us a call - we can confidently answer 'yes' to all of these questions. Not sure? Check out our testimonials page to see what some of our previous customers think of our customer service! |
