Replacing old fuses boxes
If you have an old fusebox, it doesn't neccessarily mean that it is unsafe - they will comply with the reglations stipulated at their time of installation. It may very well continue to supply your electricity needs. However, the modern home has a lot more elctrical devices - microwaves, ceramic hobs, computers and even large capacity electric showers. An overload on an old fuseboard with a 5 amp fuse means that you can get a big bang, a nasty or even fatal shock or a fire when you get a fault.
The latest fuse boards and consumer units contain RCD protection devices which turn off or trip the supply on a detected earth fault at 30 milliamps in milli-secounds. This reduces the chance of fatal shock to very, very low odds.
So, I should replace it then?
Not, neccessarily. But you'll really need a qualified electrican to make that assessment for you. A fuse board does not need to be replaced due to its age, only if the installation undergoes an electrical inspection and test, and is found to be none compliant with the minimum requirements of British Standards. Only at that point will it need replacing.
How much does it cost to replace a fuseboard?
To install and test a fuseboard, RCD unit or consumer unit will take an electrician around 3 to 4 hours. The unit (the fuseboard) itself costs anywhere from 65 to 120, which brings the cost to between 360 and 500 including VAT. That's the cost in London, of course!
Things to know...
...when installing a new consumer unit. The local council needs to be notified when you install or replace one of these devices. You can notify them yourself but you will be charged for informing them. No surprises there, then. However, a professionally registered electrician (i.e. a Multi-trade electrician) can do this on your behalf and we don't charge for that. Using us to deal with the legal aspects will ensure that your notification is carried out properly.

|
Electrical installation certificate
The circuits installed into a consumer unit need to be inspected and tested properly. This ensures that your home is safe. An electrical installation certificate (BS7671) must be issued by the installer the device to stipulate that it has been installed correctly and safely.

|
NICEICE and NAPIT electricians
Multi-trade will only ever send you a NICEIC or NAPIT registered and approved electrician. This means that we legally determined as competent to install consumer units, inspect and test the circuits of installation, issue the relevant certificates on completion of the work and notify the council or alternative local authority on your behalf.

I will be passing your details on to all of my friends. You've done a fantastic job with the electrics. Peter was very patient, much better than the last electrician who spent five minutes switching the lights on and off and then suggested a full rewire. The light switches now correspond with the correct lights and we've got rid of the crazy disco lights that we had when we moved in. I'm really pleased.

A very professional service. Had the quote in 2 days and the work started 1 week later. It was finished exactly on time and to a high standard. The site was kept tidy throughout and clean at the end of the project. I would be happy to use your services again.
